Today I had the opportunity of attending an event championed by the Nigerian Bottling Company Ltd. with the theme #YouthEmpowered.
Going for events like this where I know there will be talks about life and the skills you need to learn and even business skills wasn't always exciting for me except on some rare occasions.
Irrespective of my feelings,I decided to attend this particular one with an open mind. I was going to see what would be different and what new things I can learn that will be useful to me(what's the point of doing something if it won't add value to you right?).
So for the first day, I can say my mind was blown. Not everything that was discussed stuck(to be honest), yet, I learnt something today that I'll always hold on to. " When you don't have money, you're a rat, and the sooner you come to terms with who you are, you'll be able to pick yourself up. Re- align with reality. Once you do, your journey to success has started".
We learnt about life skills today and the most important part of that segment was the self-assessment test which helps you know your personality, areas of strengths and weaknesses and it points out areas you should work on for self development.
A self assessment test wasn't new to me so I knew what I was answering. After the test, I discussed my self assessment with my mentor and team(a mentor was assigned to every team) and that was when I got the first challenge of who I think and I am, what I really want to do and if what my goals were really in line with who I am.
I also learnt that our motives for doing things(for example, business) should be to add value and solve a problem. don't do business for money(it doesn't mean the money won't come in).
Whatever you want to do, start it now (this is probably for someone who is reading this). Be a doer not just a talker or a planner- don't waste all your time planning and not putting in the work. I'll add that if you are fearful of anything you want to start, then that's a sign you should start it. Fear is an illusion and it isn't equal to you. If you fail at it, try again, maybe in another way.
I thought an event like this would be all talk but NBC Ltd decided to thrill us with a game and great food. What's an event without food anyways??(I'll try to get better pictures tomorrow).
In addition, The world is really moving fast and we need to stay relevant as youths- acquiring some skills would help with this so don't put away learning new skills(our bachelors degree didn't cover actual life skills).
With these few points of mine, I hope I've been able to convince you and not to confuse you that we are still working in progress and events like #YouthEmpowered contributes to our growth in helping us achieve our goals.
Watch out for Day2 tomorrow😎😎
